The Jackson County Board of Education met in Regular Session on Monday, December 8, 2008, at 5:00 p.m. at Vancleave High School Library, 12424 Highway 57, Vancleave, MS 39565.

The meeting was called to order at 5:02 p.m. by Chairman Kenneth A. Fountain. Board Member Dickerson gave the invocation. Board Member Tootle led the Pledge of Allegiance.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS AND CELEBRATIONS: Schools, groups, students and employees were recognized by the board and the administrators for recent achievements and accomplishments, as shown on page 16A.

Mr. Kenneth Fountain was recognized for his election as President of the Mississippi School Board Association President.

Jackson County School District received the Light House Award at the Mississippi School Board Association Fall Conference in Jackson, Mississippi.

St. Martin High School was recognized by the U.S. News and World Report as one of the best high schools in the nation.

VANCLEAVE CURRICULUM PRESENTATION: Millie Arender, Vancleave High School Mathematics Teacher, presented a Power Point Slide Show outlining the Vancleave High School ACT Prep Course.

WORKERS COMPENSATION UPDATE: Laura McCool updated the board on workers compensation insurance and accidents for the month of November, as shown on page 16B. Ms. McCool reminded the board that they had requested a suggestion at the November board meeting regarding the removal of incidents from a locations safety ratio to qualify for the Safety Incentive Grant. Ms. McCool made two suggestions. 1) If an employee seeks medical treatment for an injury then it will be classified as an accident and will be charged to their safety ratio. 2) Create an Executive Safety Committee comprised of the Human Resources Director, the four Assistant Superintendents, and the Food Services Director. They will review each incident and determine by unanimous vote if an incident will be removed from a safety ratio. Board Member Fountain stated that he agreed with the first suggestion. No action was taken.

JACK PICKETT - OPINION ON FLAGSTAR BID PROTEST: Mr. Pickett indicated the protest was minor in nature and he saw no legal grounds for the school board not to proceed with the awarding of the bid as recommended by Eley Guild Hardy.
