STEVE OIVANKI - COMPTON ENGINEERING: Motion by Turner, second by Tootle, to approve recommendation of Steve Oivanki of Compton Engineering to move forward with closure of the St. Martin High School lagoon even though after six months there has been no response from the Environmental Protection Agency to certified letters and telephone calls requesting any comments regarding closure and to authorize Superintendent Robinson to request the Jackson County Board of Supervisors for assistance with their equipment to help defray costs, with the following vote taken:

MIGRANT PRESENTATION: Southern Coast Migrant Director Cindy Cantrelle presented an overview of the migrant program to the Board. Serving the children of migratory agricultural workers or fishermen in South Mississippi who have moved from one school district to another in the preceding thirty-six months in search of seasonal or temporary employment, the program provides enrollment assistance and interpreting, attendance monitoring, communication between school and home, and basic school supplies, and assistance in obtaining basic school uniforms. The program also offers preschool information and referral tutorials, after-school tutoring, in-school tutoring, summer reading/readiness, and technical assistance/training for classroom teachers of migrant students. In Jackson County School District, the largest district served and administrator for the project, the program served 336 children in 2003-04, 387 children in 2002-2003, and 344 children in 2001-02.

CURRICULUM UPDATE: Dr. Lisa McCartney, Elementary Curriculum Director, updated the Board on curriculum pacing guides that are being developed to be used throughout the district with goals to raise achievement to the highest standard. Teachers have been meeting since July to develop curriculum objectives and pacing guides for the year. These guides were developed for classroom teachers, by classroom teachers, with everything expected for students to know or learn in grades kindergarten through fifth grade for the school year. This will provide continuity throughout the district. Sixth grade pacing guides are to be developed in the near future.

NEW TEACHER UNITS: Motion by Turner, second by Sims, to approve the following new teacher units due to going over the student ratios set (1 to 24 in grades kindergarten through fifth, 1 to 17 in sixth through eighth grades, 1 to 16.5 for high school) in their respective classes, with the following vote taken:

Heidelberg as the basis for the rental for the eight-year reappraisal of Clinton Collom's sixteenth section commercial lease at 16-T6S-R7W, as per lease contract, and that five percent be set as the assessment fee for this eight-year appraisal period, with the following vote taken:
