Title 1 Page

News from the Title 1 Department.

How Does Title 1 Work?

1. The federal government provides funding to the state. To get funds, each state must submit a plan describing:

  • what all students are expected to know and be able to do
  • the standards of performance that all students are expected to meet
  • ways to measure the schools' progress

2. The state educational agency sends the money to school districts based on the number of families below a set income level.

3. The local school district identifies eligible schools and distributes Title 1 resources.

Jackson County School District budgets 1% of Title 1 funds allocated for parental involvement activities. Decisions regarding allocations of these funds are made at the annual Title 1 Parent Meeting. More detailed information can be obtained from the JCSD web site.

Our Title Program is better than ever! We are in the infancy of developing an intervention lab equal to no other. The brain child of our wonderful administration, we are working as an intervention team to meet the individual needs of each student. As a student begins to struggle in the classroom, our team meets to develop a plan to help this student. Part of that plan may be to attend the daily Title class. In our Title classroom, we gather information and baseline data so we can monitor each student's growth and success. These interventions include, but are not limited to, small group instruction, one-on-one instruction, re-teaching, choral reading, computer intervention, behavioral interventions, sensory integration, motivational charts, parent training, peer training, and teacher training.

A typical week includes computer intervention on Monday and Wednesday with pull out time for one-on-one and small group instruction. On Tuesday and Thursday, we have group reinforcement of weekly skills covered in the student's homeroom classroom. Each student's progress is monitored weekly using STEEP progress monitors in reading and math, AR records, grades, and computer intervention programs.

Highly Qualified Teachers

On January 8, 2002 President Bush signed into law the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. This law frames the federal government's involvement in the public education system of the United States for the next several years. Part of the law requires that schools employ staff who are "highly qualified" as defined by the law. In Mississippi, our state department of education has defined "highly qualified" as having the appropriate license to teach whatever subject a teacher is currently teaching. However, MDE regulations allow, on a limited basis, teachers to teach subjects other than those for which they are licensed.

If you would like to look at a listing of our faculty and staff and their qualifications, you may stop by the office or request this by phone. The only time that we anticipate that we may have to employ a person who is not "highly qualified" is if we have a faculty member who must take a long term medical or maternity leave. If this happens, you will be notified if this affects your child.
