Windows XP & the Internet Vocabulary

Close - removing a document or window from the screen

Default - setting used unless another option is chosen

Home Page - first page that appears when you start your web browser

Icon - small pictures that represent an item or object

Integrated Software Package - computer program that combines common tools into one package

Internet - vast network of computers linked to each other

Internet Explorer - Office XP's browser for navigating the Web.

intranet - a company's private network

Link - words or objects that may be clicked to move from page to page within a Website, to jump to another Website, or to go to a different location within a document.

Menu - list of options from which to choose

Open - process of loading a file from a disk onto the screen

Pull-down menu - a list of commands that appear below each menu name on the menu bar.

Save - process of storing a file on disk.

Task Pane - separate window on the right hand side of the opening screen that contains commonly used commands.

Toolbar - bar at the top or bottom of the screen that displays buttons you can click to quickly choose a command.

Uniform resource locators (URLs) - Internet addresses that identify hypertext documents.

World Wide Web - system of computers that share information by means of hypertext links.

Web Browser - software used to display Webpages on your computer monitor.

Word Lesson 1

Landscape orientation - a document printed that is wider than they are long
Normal view - simplified page layout that allows you to enter and format text quickly
Portrait orientation - of a document printed that is longer than they are wide
Task pane - a separate window on the right hand side of the document window
Print preview - a command that enables you to look at a document as it will appear when printed
Word processing - the use of computer software to enter and edit text
Word wrap - when the text you are keying extends beyond the right margin, it automatically moves to the next line


Word Lesson 2

Clipboard - a temporary storage in the computer’s memory
Copy - a command in which a copy of your selected text is placed on the clipboard while the original text remains in the document
Cut - a command that removes the selected text from your document and places it on the clipboard
Drag and drop - a quick method for copying and moving text a short distance
Overtype mode - allows you to replace existing text with the new text that is keyed
Paste - text is copied from the clipboard to the location of the insertion point in the document
Selecting - highlighting a box of text
