Goal:

The goal of this course is to provide basic skills in the operation of microcomputers, including an introduction to computers, keyboarding skills, and using various applications of software.

Competencies:

v       Identify school and program policies related to Computer Discovery.
v     Perform basic computer operations related to computer usage.
v     Perform basic Windows applications.
v     Perform basic keyboarding applications.
v     Perform basic word processing applications.
v     Perform basic desktop publishing applications.
v     Perform basic spreadsheet applications.
v     Perform basic database applications.
v     Utilize telecommunications (Internet) applications.
v     Prepare and present a multimedia presentation.

Methods of Instruction: 

Lecture, notes, handouts, worksheets, class discussion, PowerPoint presentations, audio/visual presentations, class demonstrations, daily keyboarding activities, daily computer assignments.
Methods of Evaluation:

Unit test, Skills test, Quizzes, Computer work, Projects, Keyboarding performance on speed and accuracy and master all required competencies for class (See attached Competency Profile).


Required Material/Equipment/Supplies:

Loose leaf notebook paper, three ring binder, and pencils.


Grading Policy:
 

Students must pass all competencies, key 30 net words a minute in a three-minute timed writing, complete all 60 keyboarding lessons, and have a passing grade before receiving one high school Carnegie unit of credit that satisfies the State’s requirement of computer applications for graduation.  Grade weighting for this class is:

Test – 28%
Time writings – 27%
Daily Work – 25%
Micro Type– 20%

SUCCESS     

Keep track of all your work.  You must have a three-ring binder for this class, so punch and keep all your work as you receive it.

Be patient.  Computers will sometimes do mean things, like shut down or quit working at the worst time.  Take it with a grain of salt and don’t let it get you down. Save work frequently to avoid major problems.

Class Rules:

1.  Follow directions the first time they are given.
2.  Remain in your chair at your assigned workstation.
3.  Talk only with permission.
4.  Book bags, purses and other personal items in specified area and ready to begin the day’s assignment before the tardy bell rings.
5.  No eating, drinking, or chewing on objects such as gum, candy, pen caps, paper, erasers, etc.

Consequences if a student chooses to break a rule:
