Dr. Michael H. Van Winkle has lived most of his life along the Mississippi Gulf Coast and is a product of the public educational system graduating from Long Beach High School in 1974.

Dr. Van Winkle attended Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on a football scholarship and graduated in 1976. Upon his graduation from The University of Southern Mississippi in 1980, he began his educational career as a teacher and coach (football and basketball) in the Pass Christian School District at Pass Christian Middle School. He later transferred to the Jackson County School District to teach and coach (football, basketball, and tennis) at St. Martin High School. During this time, he enrolled and completed his Masters, in Educational Administration, degree from The University of Southern Mississippi in 1998. Upon the completion of this degree, he became an assistant principal serving for six years at St. Martin High School. During this time Dr. Van Winkle completed his Specialist, in Educational Administration, degree from The University of Southern Mississippi in 2002. He became the principal of St. Martin Middle School in 2004 and led that school for three and half years.

In January 2008, Dr. Van Winkle became an Assistant Superintendent in the Jackson County School District. He leads the St. Martin Attendance Center. Dr. Van Winkle completed his doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2009. He has continued his career, as an Assistant Superintendent, in the Jackson County School District.
