PROFILE & HISTORY

PROFILE

East Central High School, serving grades 9 through 12, is located in rural northeast Jackson County, Mississippi. The campus and athletic facilities are situated between the Hurley and Wade communities on Highway 614, twenty-five miles north of Pascagoula and 20 miles west of Mobile, Alabama. Students are bused in from many different communities, including Hurley, Wade, Harleston, Polktown, Big Point, Helena, and Three Rivers.

East Central High School, one of seven public and two private high schools in Jackson County, maintains an average enrollment of 750-875 students. The school has 49 full-time teachers, one full-time media specialist, one career center technician, three full-time SPED aids, two academic counselors, and two full-time administrators. Teachers with advanced degrees make up 34.6 percent of the school's staff, a percentage that far exceeds the state and district averages.

HISTORY

In 1928 the Wade School opened, serving grades 1 through 12 in the Wade and Big Point communities. Ten years later, the Hurley school was built for grades 1 through 8 to combat the effects of the depression. Prior to the construction of the Hurley school, children of the Hurley, Harleston, and Big Point communities traveled some 15 or more miles to school in Moss Point. Davis Chapel School was the local facility for the black children of Polktown and Three Rivers.

In 1959 Hurley and Wade Schools consolidated to become East Central Schools. The Wade School mascot, "Hornet," was adopted as the East Central mascot and school colors of maroon and white were chosen. The first senior class of ECHS graduated 33 students. Today, East Central High School graduates more than 200 students per year.
