Coach: Josh Bishop Powerlifting began as a competitive sport in Mississippi high schools in the late 1980's. Each competitor (lifter) attempts to lift more weight than others in his weight class in three events: Squat, Bench Press, and Dead Lift. Each lifter recieves three attempts in each events, with the highest amount of weight in each event recorded as his "Max." The lifter who has lifted the most combined weight in each class is declared the winner in that class. A powerlifting team consists of a maximum of ten lifters, with no more than two lifters in any class. A team score is given based on the lifter's finish in each weight class (7 points for first, 5 points for second, etc.). The team with the most points at the end of the meet is declared the overall meet winner, but winners in each weight class are recognized. Meets at the district level and above also recognize and outstanding individual lifter. In Mississippi High School Powerlifting there are three levels of playoff competition: the District Meet, the North/South Meet, and the State Championship Meet.
Information on this year's team schedule will be released soon. |
